  2001 Second Quarter
Canada Is 'Full of Beans'

Canadians aren't full of beans…yet. But they will get closer to the brim, thanks to a new project sponsored by Heinz Canada, W.G. Thompson & Sons and the Ontario government. The program aims to dramatically increase the consumption of white pea beans in Canada.

The project partners are investing $3.4 million to promote the great taste and health benefits of beans. The effort is an attempt to arrest a steady decline in bean sales in recent years. Heinz and W.G. Thompson & Sons aim to increase the $50-million-a-year bean industry by offering three-year contracts to Ontario bean growers. The Ontario government is providing financial assistance and research information through its Rural Job Strategy Fund.

Bean production is vital to the future of Heinz's canning operation in Leamington, Ontario; therefore, Heinz is working with its Better With Beans partners to increase consumption by more than one-third and to increase bean exports to the U.S.
